Chapter 26

Sora

“Quick! Pull him back!” I scream.

Ashe races forward and grabs Ole, dragging him back into the shelter. The giant brute of an Ashen flicks off the blood from his steel beam and continues to walk towards me.

Gritting my teeth, I race forward with my shield raised. Dropping into a slide, I avoid the swing of the brute and smash my mace into his knee. A sickening pop sounds out and the brute collapses to the ground.

The steel beam falls from its hand, but it still swings at me in a back hand. Raising my shield I take the blow and slide back several feet.

Raising my hand to the air, I call on the sun’s energy and bring down a thin beam of concentrated light. The yellow glow of energy pierces through the Ashen’s head and just to finish it off, I rush forward and bring my mace down on its skull.

When the Ashen doesn’t crumble underneath me, I smash it again and again until nothing remains of the head.

Looking around, I eye the dozens of bodies that are littered around the clearing. Poe is still flying overhead, but thanks to her many of the bodies are burning and smoldering.

A scream of anger and despair comes from the shelter and I sprint back inside. The walls are partially collapsed in the hall and I have to be careful to step over the rubble.

A trail of blood leads me to Ole and the others. My husband has blood trailing down his face and his chest looks partially collapsed. Leasha is by his side, pushing healing energy into his body as tears roll down her face.

Riley is busy pouring a reagent over his body, healing the rot that was starting to spread. Her hands shake and tremble as she spills the contents of the bottle.

Briar is busy wetting a towel from his canteen and preparing to hand it over. Ashe is whimpering off to the side, unable to help when he’s needed most.

“How is he?” I ask.

Riley trembles as she responds. “He’s not good.”

“Can you heal him?”

Leasha doesn’t look up when she says, “I’m doing my best…” Sniffling, she quickly wipes her face before pushing even more magic into him. “I…”

“Take your time,” I tell her.

Nodding, Leasha puts a determined expression on and the air fills with warmth as her healing magic overflows from Ole.

“Ashe,” I start. “I need you to watch the tunnel. Protect us.”

Whimpering, the giant fox gets up and moves to the entrance.

Kneeling by Ole’s side, I touch his cheek. His face is pale. Far paler than I’ve seen before. Blood continues to flow from a wound on his head, but the spreading rot has finally stopped.

Taking the towel from Briar, I press it to the wound and control the bleeding. Slowly his chest cracks and grinds as the bones are reset and he takes a deep breath.

A wave of relief washes through me as he starts breathing normally. Leasha nearly collapses by my side as her mana is spent.
